To produce a solid extrusion, a flat die is used. Depending on the section size and weight, the die can consist of one or more cavities, corresponding to the sections cut to length.
To produce a hollow extrusion, two tools are needed, together with a so called backer, which supports the die. The first part is called the core and is attached to a bridge, through which the metal separates. This shapes the internal surface of the profile. The second part is a matrix which shapes the external contours of the profile. As the aluminium separates when it passes the core, to later fuse together again before it passes the die opening, means that joints are formed by the method, although these are very strong.
